Can Dogs Eat Turon? Is Turon Good For Dogs?

Turon is a snack loved in the Philippines. It is a sweet treat wrapped in a crispy golden brown shell. Jackfruits and banana slices are its commonly used constituents, before it is coated in caramelized sugar, then enveloped in an egg roll wrapper before finally being deep-fried to that perfection we all so dearly crave, but can dogs eat turon? Here is all you need to know.

Turon, what is it?

Turo is also known as banana lumpia and is one of the most common street foods you will encounter in the urban and rural parts of the Philippines, just like lumpia shangai and other forms of lumpia. Turon is usually served alongside Maruya and banana cue or banana fritter.

Turon is usually credited to the Chinese presence in the Philippines, just like the Chinese-style noodles, pancit, but they have since been incorporated into traditional Filipino foods with a touch of the culinary goodness of the Philippines. Consider turon as a combination of the fondness Filipinos have for bananas and Chinese egg rolls.

Can Dogs Eat Turon?

Turon has lots of sugar content, but your dog can occasionally have half to one roll and no more. It is made with fruits, which can be beneficial to your dog, but it is deep-fried with a caramelized topping, making it too sugary and calorie-dense to be a constant treat for your dog.

When it comes to feeding human foods to dogs, we need to exercise basic caution so as not to negatively impact our dog’s health. While certain foods may not harm our dogs, we should still be cautious.

Fortunately for you, I am invested in making dog-friendly treats, and I have a more dog-tailored version of Turon that I know your pooch will love (check for that at the later part of the article).

Is Turon Good For Dogs?

The slices of bananas in the roll could provide your dog with essential vitamins C and B6, potassium, manganese, and magnesium. It can also be beneficial to your pooch’s digestive health as it contains lots of fiber. They have low sodium and cholesterol, making turon a great treat. However, fresh bananas are better than those fried in oil.

Jackfruits are a powerhouse for micronutrients like vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B1, vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium. Further, its antioxidant component can support your dog’s immune system, skin, and nervous system.

Turon is a snack that contains lots of vitamins and minerals that can be beneficial to your dog because of its banana and jackfruit content.

Is Turon Bad For Dogs?

Turon can be bad for dogs. Like other egg rolls, turion’s wrapper soaks up oil when fried, which significantly increases its calorie and saturated fat content, which could lead to weight gain.

Also, fried foods can be unsafe for dogs as they could inflame their pancreas if they are allowed to consume too much, leading to damage to your pooch’s intestines, which is a life-threatening situation with the dog vomiting like crazy, according to Martine Hartogensis, D.V.M., the deputy director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance at the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.

While caramel is not toxic to dogs, it could do a lot of damage if fed constantly to them. Caramel contains lots of sugar, which could cause diabetes, obesity, dental disease, and weight gain if it constantly finds itself in your dogs’ foods or treats.

Can Puppies Eat Turon?

Puppies cannot have the traditional turon as it may disrupt their system, causing upset stomachs, among other illnesses. Puppies should stick to their designated foods and treats that will aid the proper growth and development of their organs.

My dog Ate Turon, What will happen?

If your dog has half to one turon roll, nothing will happen to them. Turon is not toxic to dogs, but the more your dog consumes, the higher the chances of an upset stomach. However, nothing serious will happen to your pooch unless it has underlying diseases like diabetes and pancreatitis.

The reason we encourage you not to let your dogs eat lots of sugary and fried foods is because of their long-term implications. It is always better to provide dog-friendly treats and foods to uphold the quality of your dog’s life.

It is more like eating lots of eggs, fried foods, and having lots of alcohol as a human; it will not instantly kill you, except if you consume excessive amounts, but over time, you will develop cholesterol, which will heavily impact your heart, and you will also develop diabetes, which reduces the quality of your life. Now you can see the logic.

Dog-safe turon recipe

Ingredients

  • Bananas
  • Peanut butter (Kirkland organic peanut butter or any xylitol-free brand)
  • Jackfruit, or your dog’s favorite fruit

Instruction

  • Boil some bananas, then roll them into thin flour wrappers, then bake until golden brown.
  • Slice some other bananas or your dog’s favorite fruit and wrap them in the banana wrappers you just made.
  • Fold, seal, and coat with peanut butter, then serve and watch your dog wag its tail in ecstasy.

Final Thoughts

Turun is not outright bad for dogs, but it is not the best treat to give your dog either. It contains lots of sugar, and it is deep-fried, which could spell danger to your dog’s health in the long run.
